Italians and the “Siesta”: Myth or Reality?

When people think of

When people think of Italy, they often imagine Italians enjoying long afternoon breaks after lunch. But let’s debunk a myth: the famous Siesta, typical of Spain, is not part of Italian habits!

The “Pennichella”: A Luxury for the Few

In Italy, if someone takes a short nap after lunch, we call it a “pennichella”. However, this is mostly a privilege for retirees or those with a more relaxed lifestyle. For everyone else, the day looks quite different.

People who work or study have different lunch break durations:

  • 30 minutes: for those who grab a quick meal at work.
  • 90 minutes: for those who can go home and prepare lunch for themselves or their family.

Daily Life and School

In Italy, schools rarely have afternoon classes, and only a few offer a cafeteria service. Students return home hungry around 1:00 PM, eager for a warm meal prepared with care.

And despite common stereotypes, we don’t eat like it’s Christmas every day! During the week, we prefer simple meals that allow us to be productive in the afternoon without feeling sluggish.

How Italians Live

A typical Italian day is well-structured and busy:

  • Breakfast: quick and light, usually with cappuccino, biscuits, or toast with jam.
  • Lunch break: not only a time to eat but also to take care of household chores and family responsibilities.
  • Dinner: usually around 8:00 PM, as many people work late. At 6:00 PM? That’s snack time!

Food and Well-being: The True Italian Lifestyle

For Italians, food is more than just nourishment—it’s culture, tradition, and health. A balanced diet and an active lifestyle are key elements of our well-being.

Conclusion

The “Siesta” is a Spanish custom that never really took root in Italy. And no, we don’t eat only pizza and spaghetti, and we definitely don’t play the mandolin after lunch! 😊

Italians are hardworking and know how to balance work, family, and health, all while maintaining a unique and authentic way of life.
